August 16, 2005 -- The big event of 2005, besides finishing The Queen of Fats, was being appointed fence viewer for the town of Bedford. The first fence viewers for the town went back to 1681, the same year the town was founded. But the position has been unoccupied since 1830 -- until now. My job will not be to settle fencing disputes (the role of earlier fence viewers); but to be a resource for the town and its residents regarding stone walls; to raise awareness of the historical and aesthetic contributions of walls. I'll be creating a slide show on the dos and don'ts of stone wall building and look forward to putting on a plug hat and frock coat (the traditional apparel of the job) to do my wallwatching.
